Camera Pioniers

Jan Rutger Holst

Jan Rutger Holst
In 1893 he became co-owner of Loman & Co and owner of the company shortly thereafter. Under the name Holst & Zimmerman Company and shorty after under the name Reflex Company , he modified the Holland Reflex (with a number of patents). However, in the same period, the rolfilmcamera was taken in mass-production and came on the market at much lower cost. In 1897 the company was dissolved and Holst moved to the United States. There he joined the Goerz Optical Works (New York) and was allowed to exploit his Reflex patents and founded the Reflex Camera Company. The importance of serial production was now clear to him and was taken in consideration in the production line. His camera from 1897 was the first Reflex Camera build in America ever. In 1899 Holst received a patent for an improvement of the shutter. Holst left the company in 1908 and continued working as a technician in America. Some of the cameras Holst produced in America, were the Junior Reflex, Reflex Hand Camera and the Special Regular Reflex

Reflex Hand Camera rond 1900

Reflex Hand Camera around 1900
On the left there are 3 buttons, at the front one for the focus, back down to increase the spring tension = speed up the shutter release, on top the button for the curtain tension. When the shutter is released, it moves (just like the first Loman Reflex) the mirror up and after pressing longer releases the shutter is released. The top button has a slot created, which is there to choose a certain wind vane (in different sizes made of cardboard) for the wanted speed. The greater the wind vane, the more air friction, the slower the shutter speed! Come see for yourself! The camera was generally, like the Loman Reflex supplied without lens, the photographer usually supplied their own lens. This camera has a Rectilineair lens with a Bausch and Lomb Victor shutter with shutter speeds up to 1 sec.
